My name is Dave Hyde, an artist from Lincolnshire. I've been doing drawings since my mid teens, so for over forty years now. I developed my style, using pen and ink, as I like the striking effect black and white can create.
When I first started doing my drawings I subscribed to a magazine called Kit Cars & Classics having built my own kit car a Dutton Phaeton! They occcasionally had illustrations on their letter pages so I contacted them and asked if they would feature some of my drawings and they agreed.
This led to a number of commissions including from private collectors, a kit car start up and a few clubs including the Marcos Club of Switzerland!
More recently in September 2023, I was featured in Practical Classics magazine as I was asked by the deputy editor James Walshe if I would feature in his 'Staff Car Saga' and do a drawing of his treasured Citroen 2CV and Citroen Dyane.
My style...
I always work from photographs, as I can see the detail more clearly, but my approach is not photo-realism, rather to capture the spirit of the car I am drawing.
I look at what is there and then make decisions, some conscious, some intuitive, as to what to draw and what to leave out. Sometimes I'll do the whole vehicle and then return to add the details, other times I will start in one area, complete it, then move to another. This makes each drawing unique - if I did another from the same photograph, it would have a different feel.
